Food

All the surveys indicated that more than half of the children aged 6-36 months are suffering from chronic malnutrition i.e. stunting (low height for age). The situation from 1975 to 1996 is not improving rather deflecting or worsening. It is also found that availability of food per head is also declining over the year which indicate a great challenge.

Nearly about 9% to 16% children are found having acute malnutrition (wasting) i.e. low weight, for height) in all the surveys during 1995-1996. However there were variation by seasons, areas and availability of food. About half (46%-49%) children aged 6 to 36 months were found to be suffering from general malnutrition i.e. under weight for age (stunting and wasting) in all the surveys. However there are variation by areas and background variables.

Percentage of households consuming less than recommended levels of food (per capita calorie consumption) is highest in rural hill 47% followed by urban areas about 40% and Himalayan areas 31%. Though inadequate access to food is clearly not the sole cause of malnutrition, about 30% household have inadequate access to food. For improving nutritional situation, lot of efforts should be done in different areas of socio economic development.
