Forest Development:

The forest sector has made significant contribution to economic and social development of the country. Nepal is very rich in terms of natural resources and bio-diversity. A broad range of ecosystems flourishes on relatively less area of the land in Nepal. If renewable resources are properly managed and utilized, the rate of development could be accelerated. The gross domestic product of the country has not been properly appraised and accounted in order to reflect the actual contribution of the forestry sector. The forest sector has been the backbone of the agriculture sector.

Although the forest sector has a vital place in the environmental conservation in Nepal, its condition has been deteriorating since the past few decades. The smuggling of forest products has also been increasing. The forest areas have been used for road construction, academic institution and for other development and construction works, and the increasing pressure of population and various other factors caused adverse impacts upon the forest areas. The productivity of the forest sector decreased because of the effects of uncontrolled migration, and grazing practices and forest fire.

In such situation, a serious responsibility of conserving various types of vegetation and animals and birds existing in the country and of rescuing them from extinction has fallen on the forest sector. Making arrangements to fulfill the daily consumer needs like timber and firewood for increasing population has been the additional challenge to forest sector.

On the basis of the current situation of forest resources, natural environment and development are regarded as a foundation for the overall system. Based on this assumption, the main objectives of the forestry sector will be the mobilization, conservation and management of forest resources to equilibrate their demand and supply; the creation of income-oriented and employment opportunities for the poor and marginal families, the mobilization of peoples participation for productivity enhancement, and the adoption of proper land-use plan.
