Himalayan Resources

Himalayan Resources While the Himalayan region has a well-established protected areas system, many areas are too small to maintain genetically viable populations of threatened species. Some habitat types are under-represented and management of many sites could be strengthened. Trade in rare animal species and medicinal plants further deplete the unique biological riches of the Himalayas. Conservation of soils, forests and agro-biodiversity has become a serious concern for all the countries in the region. With high levels of population growth and in-migration to biodiversity-rich areas, communities are increasingly unable to meet their natural resource needs. The economic consequences of biodiversity loss in the Himalayas include reduced access to fuel, medicinal plants and other harvested resources; degraded pastures; increased soil erosion and reduced soil fertility and reduced hydrological value.

Based on these principles, five projects concepts are proposed for Himalayan resource management
